A Childhood Without a Father

For Gabriel, life started with brokenness. But through the power of Jesus and the community at The Way Out Ministries, it has become a testimony of healing, redemption, and purpose.  When Gabriel was five years old, his father left. With his mom emotionally distant and abusing alcohol, Gabriel began searching for the love and guidance he lacked.

“I was just looking for someone to care,” he says. “I ended up finding it in gang members — they taught me how to tie my shoes and draw, but also introduced me to smoking and drinking.”

By middle school, Gabriel was immersed in graffiti, vandalism, and street life. Fights and gang activity led to him getting kicked out of school. But the outward rebellion was a reflection of deep inner pain.

Depression, Isolation, and Hopelessness

Eighth grade brought a new wave of struggles: depression and anxiety. With nowhere to turn and no one who truly seemed to understand, Gabriel’s emotional burden grew heavier.

“I wanted comfort. I didn’t want excuses or explanations — just love. And I didn’t know where to find it.”

That pain led Gabriel into a dark place, ultimately causing him to self-harm and even attempt suicide placing him in a hospital and later a mental institution. He survived — but emotionally, he still felt lost.

“I would lie to get out of the hospital, but I never really healed. I kept falling into the same habits.”

Birthday Invitation That Changed Everything

Everything began to shift when Gabriel’s friend Emiliano invited him to a birthday party at The Way Out Ministries Youth Center.

“It was full of games and fun, but the thing that stood out most was the love. The community welcomed me like family. It was the first time I felt seen and cared for.”

That first visit led to more. Gabriel kept coming back and eventually met leaders who became mentors and spiritual guides. The turning point came at his first youth summer camp.

Encountering God’s Love

At camp, Gabriel experienced something he had never felt before — the overwhelming, unconditional love of God.

“I broke down in tears during worship and ended up talking to one of my youth leaders and gave my life to Jesus. I felt like the Holy Spirit grabbed me — like I was being hugged. That was the moment I knew this love was real.”

That night, Gabriel spoke with his youth leader Kristen, shared his story, and made the life-changing decision to accept Jesus into his heart.

“I thought I was too tough to cry. But God humbled me and I finally felt peace.”

A New Life in Christ- Since surrendering his life to Jesus, Gabriel has experienced total transformation — emotionally, spiritually, and even in his family.

“My life has done a 360. I’m full of peace and joy. Even my family has seen the difference. I got to lead my little sister to Jesus! And that was a proud big brother moment.”

“I have a future now. I have a purpose. I want to be a husband and father who leads his family in Christ — the kind of man I needed growing up.”

Looking Ahead

“My story is far from over. I know God has big plans for me, and I’m excited for whatever’s next. Gabriel’s journey is a powerful reminder that no one is ever too far gone, and nothing is too broken for Jesus to restore. Through one invitation, one community, and one encounter with God's love — everything changed.
