Summer Kick Off

Our summer season began with two big events made possible by Antelope Valley Partners for Health (AVPH)  in their collaboration with Hawaiian Gardens. The TPI (Trauma Prevention Initiative) mini grant helped us to kick off our summer programming for   children and youth with food, games, and prizes.  Both events were well attended and provided us with a great opportunity to follow-up with kids and their families throughout the summer in our weekly programs, church services and camps.

CAMP CREATION

Our Camp line up started with Camp Creation—a week long urban kids’ camp that featured daily skits, camp songs, recreation, crafts and Bible teachings focused on the creation story. The last day of the camp concluded with a petting zoo full of God’s wonderful creatures— we of course are all His handiwork, created  in Christ Jesus to do good works (Ephesians  2:10).  Thank you for your part in that work too… we couldn’t have done without our sponsors!

One week before the 80 community campers burst through our doors, a team of ten short-term missionaries came all the way from Nebraska to create all the sets.  Long- time pastor, friend and artist, Doug Applegate, once did a summer internship with The Way Out Ministries in 1992. After he became a youth pastor in Iowa, he began to bring out youth teams regularly. This time he accompanied his daughter, Willow, the art director at F Street Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Together, they led an artistic team of youth to serve Jesus with their talents.  As they were leaving, another youth mission team arrived from Doug’s church where he now serves as Director of Family Ministries.  “Junkyard” youth pastor, Todd Stiles, from The Ridge Church in Prairie Ridge, Iowa organized his team to work with our staff and volunteers to make Camp Creation an experience that blessed everyone in attendance!  The mission group also painted, built desks, and beautified our deck with new plants and trees.

BAPTISIM

This year began our ministries’ Young Adult Group for ages 18-30 led by Ryan Bruce and staff/ volunteers Aundrea Velasquez and David Obergan. The regular meetings have found great success with the busy schedules of these adults by teaching eight week topical Bible series/ breakouts followed by short breaks. In May the group had an impromptu baptism at Bolsa Chica Beach that was requested by Gus, a young man who has grown spiritually in the group.  Three others joined him in taking the plunge into faith while friends and family cheered them on!

MISSION POSSIBLE

Please be in prayer as 12 short-term missionaries from The Way Out Ministries prepare for our first mission trip to the The Way Out Ministries Philippines October 8-17.  The team will be doing 5 evangelistic/ humanitarian outreaches. They will also be doing some light construction and working with children.  More information in our next newsletter.

Thank you for helping us bring Jesus to so many people. God bless you all!
